Causes And Treatment Of Vertigo
Help For Vertigo
Vertigo can be a very unsettling and uncomfortable disorder and can last as little as a minute or two or even hours or days. Symptoms include a sensation of spinning, swaying, unbalance, nausea, headache and ringing in the ears.
Causes Of Vertigo
One of the most common causes of vertigo is a build up of fluid and pressure change in the inner ear, also called Meniere’s disease. This can result in a ringing of the ear (tinnitus) and hearing loss. Other causes include a build up of tiny calcium particles in the inner ear canals, viral infection and, less common, head or neck injury.
Vertigo Treatment
If after several days there is still a sense of loss of balance and dizziness has not subsided a few short physical therapy appointments can help decrease or completely alleviate chronic vertigo using various techniques of Vestibular Rehabilitation (VR) which trains the brain to compensate for the imbalance in the ear.
Canalith Repositioning Procedure (CRP) is used to treat people with loose calcium particles in their inner ear. It consists of a series of a series of specifically patterned head and body positioning maneuvers.
In the case of virus in the inner ear, medication may be prescribed.
VR is a very effective treatment and can be performed by our physical therapists at Physical Therapy and Wellness Center.
